New NASA coalition to lead search for life on distant worlds. A new NASA initiative is embracing a team approach to the quest for life on planets around other stars.Professor Steve Desch is principal investigator of an Arizona State University -centered team that is one of 16 teams funded by a new NASA.

NASA’s new network is part of its Astrobiology program. NExSS includes planetary scientists, astrophysicists and heliophysicists who will carry out research to help NASA define future space missions, determine target selection and craft observing strategies, to aid in the characterization of exoplanets and the search for life on them. Just as the Kepler mission found thousands of exoplanets that transit their host stars (pass between us and the star), NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite will be launched in 2017 with the hopes of discovering thousands more among the closest stars. The James Webb Space Telescope, to be launched in 2018, will measure the infrared spectrum of starlight that passes through the atmospheres of some of these transiting exoplanets, discerning what gases are present. To understand the geochemical cycles on exoplanets with compositions different from Earth’s, the team will pursue a multifaceted approach combining astronomical observations, astrophysical and geochemical modeling, and geophysical and geochemical laboratory experiments.

The Nexus for Exoplanet System Science (NExSS) initiative is really a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) virtual institute made to promote interdisciplinary collaboration in the quest for existence on exoplanets. NASA is getting together experts spanning a number of scientific fields to have an unparalleled initiative focused on the quest for existence on planets outdoors our solar system. The Nexus for Exoplanet System Science, or “NExSS”, wishes to better understand the various of the exoplanet, in addition to the way the planet’s stars and neighbor planets interact to aid existence. “This interdisciplinary endeavor connects top research teams and offers a synthesized approach in the quest for planets using the finest possibility of indications of existence,” states Jim Eco-friendly, NASA’s Director of Planetary Science. “The search for exoplanets isn’t just important for astronomers, it’s of keen interest to planetary and climate scientists too. “Study regarding exoplanets – planets around other stars – is really a relatively recent field. The invention from the first exoplanet around a star like our sun is made in 1995. Because the launch of NASA’s Kepler space telescope six years back, greater than 1,000 exoplanets have been discovered, with a large number of additional candidates waiting to become confirmed.

“This interdisciplinary endeavor connects top research teams and provides a synthesized approach in the search for planets with the greatest potential for signs of life,” said Jim Green, NASA’s director of planetary science. “The hunt for exoplanets is not only a priority for astronomers, it’s of keen interest to planetary and climate scientists as well. ”

NASA forms a coalition to look for life on other planets

NASA knows that it can’t rely solely on astronomers and robotic rovers to find life on other worlds, so it’s recruiting some help. The space agency has formed the Nexus for Exoplanet System Science (NExSS), a coalition of scientists who study astrophysics, Earth, other planets and the Sun. The group will use its collective knowledge to search for alien lifeforms using perspectives that NASA wouldn’t always have — how does the loss of atmospheric chemicals affect the chances for life, for example? NASA hopes that the group will not only determine the habitability of planets, but develop technology to study those planets in greater detail. There’s no guarantee that NExSS will discover organisms, let alone organisms that you might see within your lifetime, but the odds of success are now a bit higher.
