Astronomers have found a nearby “super-Earth” exoplanet that may be capable of supporting life as we know it. An international group of astronomers discovered the planet using NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) earlier this year in the constellation Hydra, about 31 light-years from Earth, according to a statement by NASA. (One light-year is the distance light travels in a year, about 6 trillion miles, or 10 trillion kilometers. )The exoplanet, named GJ 357 d, is believed to be around twice the size of Earth and harbor six times Earth’s mass. Located in the outer edge of its host star’s “habitable zone,” scientists believe that this super-Earth could have water on its surface. Its star is roughly one-third the size of our Sun and roughly 40 percent cooler, while being 31 light-years away hiding in the Hydra constellation — our cosmic backyard, in the grand scheme of things. The newly discovered system features three exoplanets, one of which is in the habitable zone, the region where temperatures are warm enough to allow for liquid water and signs of life. The furthest exoplanet in the star’s habitable zone, dubbed GJ 357 d, is about 22 percent larger than Earth and “receives about the same amount of stellar energy from its star as Mars does from the Sun,” according to a statement by co-author Diana Kossakowski at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy.

The planet is one of more than 4,000 that have been discovered by NASA’s new planet-hunting spacecraft and telescope.

Life on the planet would be quite different to Earth too. It orbits its star in 55. 7 Earth days, meaning its year is very short. It is also six times heavier and up to twice the size of Earth, but it could – if conditions are right – harbour life. “If the planet has a dense atmosphere, which will take future studies to determine, it could trap enough heat to warm the planet and allow liquid water on its surface,” stated Diana Kossakowski at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg. For life on GJ 357d, its closest neighbouring planet – GJ 357b – could be a sign of how things were if they orbited a little too closely to the star.
